The dictionary defines seed as 'a unit of reproduction, capable of developing into another'. A seed can grow into a new organism. It can survive for some time as a seed until it gets into conditions it could germinate into a new form. Its function or role is to cause something to exist out of it.
In a seed, there are instructions about what is to come and yet borne out of what has already come. A seed has inside it new definitions of what is yet to come. Most seeds have inside them nutrients with which that which is to be borne out of it has to eat. It is packaged as a life form that in fact looks like a dead object until it gets into the right conditions to become what is inside it.
Seeds have to germinate before we can know what comes out of them. Seeds of flowers have Information about the color of the flower, how tall, and many other properties. For instance, the seed of watermelon has information about the watermelon, the seeds it is going to produce, and many other goodies we know of a watermelon.
However, for a seed, no matter how good it is, how intelligent the information it has, how resilient it is or can be, there are requirements for the seed to germinate and go on to become what it was made to bring forth. Critical of these requirements is the environment within which that seed is going to germinate. Most seeds have to be dug into a hole, live in the darkness, awaiting the water they require to make their germination environment moist, and once they germinate their growth is about going out towards the light.
For seeds to germinate and start a new life form, they have odds with which to contend. The coat that covers them is generally hard, it is resistant to water, it can restrict water uptake and oxygen exchange. Sometimes their embryo might be so undeveloped and immature that nothing might seem to be possible to get them to germinate. Other seeds might be mistaken for other reasons when their make-up is to require more time before they germinate.
How seed are we, as humans in the face and context of God? At creation God, and after he has created all that earth needs to be earth, said "let us create man in our own image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over everything that creeps on the earth". In this statement of creation, God put inside the SEED that is us all the nutrients we would require to be after his likeness.
The image of a God we are created to be like is of a God we worship "for His invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and Devine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse" (Rom 1:20). "The Spirit of God has made us, and the breath of God gives us life" (Job 33:4). God has "laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning" (Jer 10:12),
As his seeds, we should, and "by faith understand that the universe was created by the Word of God so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible " (Heb 11:13). Our genetic make-up includes the creative power that God has, it includes a capacity to establish where there is nothing, the intelligence to imagine where we have never been, the skill to arrive everywhere we can see, and the power to recreate out of what has been into new forms. That is the SEED we are.
Like the agricultural seeds that were in fact created before us, for we found them here, we need to have an environment that allows us to germinate and be the potential that is uniquely inside all of us. The heavens that were created below Heaven and the earth that was created were, in the eyes of God not enough to create a suitable environment to germinate to the potential God knows or has deposited in all of us as seeds. We needed to go through a process where "if we are all in Christ, we will be a new creation. Our old would have passed away, as the new us" arrives (Cor 5:17).
If all of us dedicates to God our being, our value will be set according to the amount of seed required to germinate us (Lev 27:16). A unique seeds we should at all times seek to understand from God, what specifically defines the seeds we are, where can or are we planted. The greater that is in us is still in us, the great that we already are, ain't enough.
Let us be SEEDS, Let us GERMINATE, Let us chase the light out of us. Let us be FRUITFUL
Amen.
